More and more families are choosing sustainable and animal-free products – including shoes. But how do you find an alternative to conventional leather that's just as durable, breathable, and long-lasting? The answer: Cactus leather! POLOLO uses this innovative material for vegan barefoot sandals and sneakersthat are perfect for children's feet.

What is cactus leather and where does it come from?

Cactus leather is made from the leaves of the prickly pear (Opuntia). This resilient plant grows in Mexico under extreme conditions – without pesticides and with minimal water consumption. The Cactus Leather company, founded by Mexicans Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, has developed cactus leather as a sustainable leather alternative.

This is how cactus leather is made:

  1. The mature cactus leaves are carefully cut without damaging the plant.
  2. Afterwards they will dried in the sun for three daysto save energy.
  3. The dried fibers are biological binders processed – without toxic chemicals.
  4. The result: a supple, durable material that perfectly imitates real leather in both look and feel.

Why cactus leather for shoes?

  • Vegan & sustainable – No animal suffering, no chemicals, minimal water consumption.
  • Robust & durable – Perfect for active children who are on the go a lot.
  • Soft & breathable – Feels comfortable and ensures a healthy foot climate.
  • Climate friendly – The prickly pear cactus stores CO₂ and grows almost by itself.
