POLOLO - That's us

By the way, “POLOLO“ is Chilean and means “firm friend“ – and that’s what your POLOLOs should be: best friends for you and your feet!

POLOLO from 2021 on that is Franziska Kuntze and her team in Berlin. The idea for their own shoe company came to Verena and Franziska in 2003 when they were unsuccessfully looking for pretty baby first walking shoes for their own children. They started designing shoes themselves. Since the positive start in 2003 – initially at a Christmas market in Berlin-Zehlendorf – our Berlin company has been growing continuously and successfully.

Since 2021, Franziska has continued to run POLOLO and has added many new themes to the collection:

Our production & distribution

We sell to around 800 specialist shops, catalogues, mail order companies etc. in Europe, Asia, America and Australia. From year to year, our retailer network is growing and demand is increasing. The POLOLO production of ecological children’s shoes for indoors and outdoors is carried out by a competent cooperation partner in Spain – according to our specifications and standards!
Sales and management are controlled from Berlin by Franziska Kuntze and her office team.

POLOLO’s ecological standards go further than the prescribed legal requirements.

Healthy feet
Healthy feet

There are two things you should pay attention to when buying shoes: The fit and the material. Children’s feet are little marvels. They are wonderfully soft because the bones of the feet are still developing slowly. And children’s feet are much more flexible than their parents’ feet. However, this also means that the slightest pressure – triggered, for example, by shoes that do not fit properly or materials that are too hard and too little room to move – can possibly cause damage. We work on our collection in constant exchange with children’s foot experts and physiotherapists. We also make sure that we only use natural, certified, ecological materials: Vegetable tanned, uncoated natural leather, cotton (organic agriculture), wool (organic agriculture) and vegan leather alternatives obtained from the prickly pear cactus.

POLOLO relies primarily on vegetable-tanned natural leather

If you are looking for only the best for people, the environment and health, you should rely on ecological raw materials that have been known for thousands of years when manufacturing children’s shoes: Tanning leathers based on plant raw materials such as barks, woods, pods, leaves or roots has been the tried and tested process for many generations. Worldwide, about 300 different plant species are used for tanning. POLOLO relies primarily on natural leather tanned with Valonea – a wild-growing oak species in Mediterranean countries. Such leathers are characterised by their strength and toughness as well as their allergy-friendliness.
For many consumers, it is becoming increasingly important to buy fair and ecological clothing. They no longer care where the products they use in their daily lives come from and what they wear on their skin. However, especially for leather processing, heavy metals (most commonly chromium) are unfortunately often used as tanning agents, which can also be harmful to health and the environment.
POLOLO therefore only uses vegetable-tanned leather from Germany. We set the highest ecological and quality standards for our raw materials. Transparency and traceability of the supply chain are also important to us.

Barefoot shoes from POLOLO

Children’s feet are constantly in “action” – their whole musculature is always in motion, and that’s how it should be, because that’s how they train their body awareness and that’s important for growing up. Little people should walk around barefoot as much as possible – and if the ground and weather don’t allow it, then they should wear POLOLOs, which nestle around their feet like a “second skin”, keeping them warm and protecting them.

The new POLOLO Barefoot collection is designed for outdoor use as well as for the special requirements in the kindergarten with a TPR sole and for indoor use as a slipper with a leather sole. The toe area is cut straight at the big toe and thus offers plenty of free space for the toes. Made with love for craftsmanship from certified vegetable tanned natural leather. Tested for harmful substances and allergies.

  • With TPR sole for outdoor and kindergarten use
  • With leather sole for indoor use
  • Sizes 20-34
  • Natural vegetable tanned leather
  • Wide toe clearance
  • Developed with children’s foot experts
  • Models: “Elastico”, “Ballerina”, “Cordel” and “Uni”

BIO Cotton BIO VEGAN Shoes

Cotton, when produced organically, is a wonderful material. It refreshes, is especially skin-friendly and does not scratch at all. We at POLOLO like to use cotton (organic agriculture) as an alternative to leather for our sneakers. Cotton is also particularly elastic and light on the foot. Like leather, it is very breathable and also has good absorbency – so it is ideal for children’s feet, especially for the summer months.

It is important for us that the cotton comes from organic cultivation. Because with organic cotton, monocultures are avoided and synthetic pesticides and fertilisers are deliberately dispensed with during cultivation – as an alternative, plant-based agents and humus are used. In organic cultivation, about 30 per cent rain-fed agriculture is used to avoid additional irrigation. The undamaged soil stores much more water.

  • 100 % cotton (organic cultivation)
  • Ban on genetic engineering
  • No synthetic pesticides
  • Optimised water consumption
  • High social standards / fair wages
  • Preservation of ecological balance
  • Health-friendly colours

Seaqual VEGAN Textile Shoes made from recycled marine plastic

Together for a clean ocean!
This motto of the Seaqual ® initiative inspired us to create our new colourful children’s shoe collection made from recycled marine plastic.
Every year, millions of tons of waste still end up in our oceans. We all know this is a threat to our environment! At Seaqual ®, this plastic waste is collected from the seabed off the Spanish coast by around 400 partner fishermen and then processed into SEAQUAL® fibre. Each kilogram of SEAQUAL® produced corresponds to one kilogram of waste.

The goal is a clean sea
SEAQUAL® focuses on plastic waste from the seabed. The SEAQUAL® partner network starts with fishing boats and extends to spinning mills, weaving mills and brands dedicated to ridding the ocean of waste and producing ecologically sound yarns, fibres and fabrics.

The SEAQUAL® material:
We usually avoid the use of polyester, but we were more than convinced by this system and the quality of the fabrics. SEAQUAL® has the same properties as fibres made from conventional polyester, but is far superior to them from an ecological point of view. It actively contributes to cleaning the oceans, saves water and energy consumption and reduces CO2 emissions. Material traceability and certificates also assure the end consumer that by choosing a SEAQUAL® product they are supporting the end of plastic pollution in a sustainable way.

VEGAN Cactus Leather Sneaker

POLOLO is always looking for new ecological, modern solutions and materials for the production of beautiful and contemporary children’s shoes.

  • The raw material for these shoes is a so-called “cactus leather”.
  • It is made from the leaves of the prickly pear cactus. The cactus is not uprooted – only renewable leaves are used for the production.
  • The cultivation is controlled organic.
  • There is no extra irrigation and no use of pesticides.
  • It does not contain any animal ingredients.
  • No energy is used to dry the leaves: The leaves dry in the sun!

As the cactus material is quite robust, we have chosen a soft microfibre lining.
