Celebration of the first kindergarten created by Friedrich Froebel in 1840
[Berlin, April 21st, 2018] The “Kindergarten Day” is celebrated primarily in the USA – to commemorate the birthday of the German pedagogue and inventor of the modern kindergarten, Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel (1782-1852). He was a disciple of the famous Swiss pedagogue Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827). Froebel recognized that early childhood is of central importance from a pedagogical point of view – he practically implemented his theoretical knowledge and developed a system of employment opportunities, songs and special toys, to promote the development of children at an early age. His ideas spread worldwide soon despite initial resistance. POLOLO’s KiGa styles are equipped with a coated felt sole, so that the little ones can move around safely fitted with these special kindergarten slippers.
Early childhood education: playing = learning
The educational value of playing had previously been completely underestimated from the point of view of educators then – Froebel, however, saw it as a typically childlike way of life and expression. So he developed e.g. special employment tools and songs so that toddlers could playfully be prepared for their lives as future adults.
In order to train human beings to be able to comprehend patterns and relations, he made three-dimensional basic shapes made of wood such as a ball, cube and cylinder – today mostly made of plastics, they are still today popular toys and learning materials for toddlers.
Kindergarten: an international paragon model of child care
In 1840, the first German kindergarten was founded in Bad Blankenburg (Thuringia). Froebel established the “General German Kindergarten” as a modern pedagogical alternative to the pure “child preservation institutions” then – based on a balanced triad of education, upbringing and care.
Froebel’s life’s work was continued by his disciples after his death in 1852. Despite interim prohibition in Prussia, the idea spreads worldwide very soon. Even today, Froebel’s pedagogical teaching earns high reputation, especially in Japan, Korea, Austria, Russia and the US. Already in the 19th century Froebel’s followers founded own kindergartens in the US: Margarethe Schurz established the first Froebel kindergarten in the New World in 1856, in Watertown (Wisconsin), which then served as a model for further establishments in America.
KiGa POLOLOs for natural running pleasure in kindergarten
KiGa-POLOLOs, are “handmade in Germany”. They are equipped with a coated felt sole – instead of PVC soles, POLOLO deliberately uses high-quality, pollution-free breathable felt and built-in TPU-material stoppers to provide soft children’s feet extra anti-slip, warming and breathable protection.
Like our SOFT slippers, the KiGa POLOLOs meet the requirements of the IVN Leather Directive. The KiGa styles “Tiger”, “Strawberry”, “Eulalia” and “Police” are available in sizes 24/25 to 32/33.
