Elves are sprites or nature spirits and originated in Scandinavian mythology.
In Iceland, elves are ever-present. Only children can see them. They only approach grownups when they feel besieged. If that happens, things can break or stop working.
So the city of Reykjavík, for instance, takes care to get an expert opinion from an elf specialist to find out if construction measures would disturb any elves. So occasionally, the site for building or the course of a street needs to be changed.

In the end, this belief shows a great deal of respect for nature.
